The Society of Managerial Engineering students of EPFL (SME), the student association of the students in Management, Technology & Entrepreneurship (MTE), has been very active since its creation a little more than a year ago.

The goal of SME is to create a sense of community among the current MTE students, to promote the Master and to build up a network with professionals.

In this matter, the SME has reached out to the European Students in Industrial Engineering and Management (ESTIEM), a European network of students, which organizes numerous academic, professional and social events over the year. Their motto “work hard, play hard” speaks to the MTE students, who have been very enthusiastic over the last year to become part of this exclusive network, where places are limited.

Two delegates of the SME, Nico Hübner and Yves Robert-Tissot, had the pleasure to participate in ESTIEM’s last council meeting in Poznan, Poland. This was the fourth council meeting in a row to which EPFL was invited, and SME successfully gained observer status. The next step will be to seek full membership and thus becoming an integral part of the network. This will give SME the right to vote as well as to propose motions and to nominate its local members as candidates for the European board.

Being part of ESTIEM benefits all MTE students, as they gain access to many high-quality events in Europe (more than 180 per year). This allows them to establish new contacts and offers them attractive opportunities to develop professionally and academically. Given how difficult it is to obtain membership, SME has shown great initiative and motivation by participating regularly in ESTIEM’s events and by showcasing the high quality of their MTE education.

SME has also been active on other fronts, namely by establishing a network of former MTE students and by organizing the first MTE Alumni Night on May 5th, 2017. During this event, which was hosted in the new atrium of the Odyssea building, various Alumni presented their personal success stories in their careers after EPFL and gave helpful advice to current MTE students regarding job applications.

Since the beginning of 2017, SME has also organized outdoor activities, visits to companies such as the luxury watchmaker Girard-Perregaux and social events that included the whole community of the College of Management of Technology.

Hopefully, the energy that SME has put into building up their network and a sense of community will enthuse the 200 and more MTE Minor and Master students so that SME continues to grow.
