Professor Ralf Seifert has been awarded a Swiss National Science Foundation research grant to study a novel aspect of the product assortment planning problem.

This problem arises in managing retail supply chains and store level inventories; it has direct consequences for a retailer’s commercial success. During this project Professor Seifert will model the increasingly popular retail practice of using combined product assortments to increase a retailer’s store traffic. The research project will take heterogeneous customer classes into account and quantify the profitability implications of using product assortment composed of both standard and variable items. In addition, it will address the resulting inventory optimization problem. The ultimate objective of this research is to provide managerial insights that can assist retailers in their strategic decision-making concerning the best use of combined product assortment.
