The new student chapter of the Optical Society of America (OSA) celebrated its official inauguration on June 20, 2011. The chapter focuses on exchange and discussion. It proposes a regular and informal meeting point for scientists working in optics and photonics research at EPFL.

The Optical Society (OSA) is pleased to announce the formation of the EPFL OSA Student Chapter on March 31, 2011. This newest addition joins more than 200 OSA Student Chapter organizations in more than 45 countries around the world. OSA is an international scientific society dedicated to promoting the generation, application and archiving of knowledge in optics and photonics and disseminating this knowledge worldwide. OSA Student Chapters provide leadership experience and yearround networking opportunities for students with the interest in optics and photonics. At EPFL, the newly established student chapter organizes a regular and informal meeting ‘Pizza-Optics-Beer’ (POB), every first Wednesday of a month. It aims to encourage scientific discussions among people with different background in optics and from different departments.

“Building a strong network of OSA Student Chapters around the globe is one of OSA’s highest priorities”, said OSA President Christopher Dainty. “We are pleased to welcome EPFL’s new Student Chapter to our growing global network of chapters and local sections. Their work will further OSA’s goal of bringing awareness of the importance of optics and photonics to a worldwide audience.”
