Catherine De Wolf is awarded an EPFL Fellow 2016 fellowship and a Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship to pursue a postdoctoral research at the Structural Xploration Lab, EPFL. Her research analyses the embodied life cycle impact of the current production of architectural structures. She aims at establishing guidelines for its reduction through incremental structural improvements.

After studying Civil Engineering and Architecture at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB) and the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Catherine obtained a Master of Science in Building Technology and a PhD in Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with Prof. John Ochsendorf. Her dissertation is about low carbon pathways for structural design. She is the author of deQo, a database resulting from a comprehensive survey of material quantities and embodied carbon in building structures. During her PhD, she also worked in the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge. Professional experiences include working for Arup, Ney & Partners and other leading architectural and structural design firms. She recently launched the Structural Engineers 2050 Commitment Initiative with the Carbon Leadership Forum and leading structural engineering companies such as Arup and Thornton Tomasetti.

She started her postdoctoral stay on August 1st, 2017. The Structural Xploration Lab is part of the smart living lab, EPFL's outpost in Fribourg.
