Prof. Urs von Gunten and his LTQE team were selected as ACS Editor's Choice for their article "Understanding the Ozonotion of Phenols" in Environmental Science & Technology journal
Abstract: During ozonation of waters containing phenol and para-substituted phenols, a widespread formation of potentially toxic benzoquinones, catechols, and cyclohexadienones are observed. Similar products are expected during ozonation of phenol-containing micropollutants and dissolved organic matter. As of yet, it is unclear to what extent these products are attenuated during biological post-treatment. See von Gunten et al.
