Scientists create new lead-free piezoelectric materials

Published:14.03.22 — EPFL researchers have discovered that gadolinium-doped cerium oxide, a compound they created in the lab, could be a promising alternative to certain piezoelectric materials: it has the same proprieties yet may be 100 times more effective. It’s also lead-free, unlike the best piezoelectric materials, which means that it could be employed in bio-compatible medical applications. Further research will be conducted on this highly promising compound and similar materials.

Deep learning: a framework for image analysis in life sciences

Yet a lack of standardization and the use of these algorithms by non-experts are potential sources of bias. New research program will study fjord ecosystems in Greenland

Published:09.03.22 — In a four-year field research program led by EPFL, in association with several other Swiss institutions, scientists will aim to understand the ecosystem of Greenlandic fjords in the context of a changing climate. They plan to investigate how accelerated glacier discharge and soil erosion impact the fjords nutrient cycle, marine resources and cloud formation, and how local livelihoods are affected.
