BIONIC - Viscosity gradient in 2D material nanopores as a new playground for biophysics

The main objective of this research proposal is take advantage of recently discovered viscosity gradient system based on room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) that permits to discriminate single nucleotides in atomically thin molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanopores. We first aim to gain insight into the retardation mechanism; in turn this will help us in selecting the most appropriate RTIL and material for 2D membrane.

To deliver high-throughput technique, we will capitalize on our experience in implementing transverse detection on nanopore platform. Moreover, we recognize that provided solution is passive in its nature and doesn’t allow for active regulation of translocation speed, therefore we plan to implement different means of feedback to fine-tune the RTILs viscosity and the two supplementary methods that can both modulate the nanopore charges.

Finally, by using viscosity gradient platform, we could also examine new physics in confined spaces.
