Professor Leroy Gardner from Imperial College London in the UK is visiting RESSLab. He will give than invited seminar with title: "Design of metal structures using the continuous strength method (CSM)"

Date: January 25, 2017

Time: 14:00pm - 15:00pm

Room: GC C2 413

ABSTRACT: The continuous strength method (CSM) is a deformation-based design approach that allows a rational exploitation of strain hardening. This presentation will describe the development of the method and its application to steel, stainless steel and aluminium structural elements. The key design concepts are expressed through a set of straightforward design equations, while the range of stress-strain responses is allowed for through material specific coefficients in the adopted bi-linear (elastic, linear hardening) material model. The design method enables enhancements in structural efficiency and, unlike traditional approaches, provides the designer with information on the level of plastic deformation that the structure is undergoing at the ultimate limit state.

BIO: Leroy Gardner is Professor of Structural Engineering at Imperial College London. He is engaged in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, specialist advisory work and leading an active research group in the area of steel structures. His principal research interests, in respect of which he has co-authored five textbooks and some 300 papers, lie in the areas of structural testing, numerical modelling and the development of design guidance for steel structures. He is a member of the European and BSI Committees responsible for Eurocode 3 and Fellow of both the Institutions of Civil (FICE) and Structural (FIStructE) Engineers. He is Editor-in-Chief of Structures and the International Journal of Steel Structures, and a member of the editorial boards of many other International journals.
