From May 2015 onwards, EPFL is offering high-quality file storage services to the whole school community. Operated by the VPSI, these new services are accessible over the network by computers running Windows, Linux and MacOS X.

Several variants are offered, according to the levels of performance and security required by the customer, whether groups (such as research laboratories) or individuals (staff, students and guests).

For groups, three variants are offered:

Collaborative storage:This is the standard storage service for laboratories, who all receive a quota of 1 TB free. If they need more space, they can buy it at a rate of CHF 300 per TB and per year. This service offers a good level of performance and a high degree of resilience. The data are replicated on a 2nd site, and the file history (snapshot) is preserved so that users can themselves retrieve files that have been modified or deleted in error. This service can typically be used for shared group directories and for active projects.

Online archive: This service is mainly designed for the storage of data that are rarely modified (for example, reference data). It offers a degree of resilience equivalent to the standard storage service, but does not enable the user to reach the same level of file history. The performance is similarly reduced, as this service is intended mainly for reference data. The price is therefore lower than for collective storage (CHF 200 per TB and per year).

Raw storage: This storage level can be regarded as a resilient virtual disk. It can, for example, be used as a destination for an additional backup copy for local data. This service is offered at CHF 100 per TB and per year.

For individual use, all users have free access to Individual storage (previously called MyNas), which allows you to retrieve your data on any device. It includes those services already operated by Switch for file synchronisation and sharing (SwitchDrive) and sending large files (FileSender).

All these storage solutions are based in Switzerland and are subject to Swiss law.
