IC School reaps numerous awards

The quality of the research projects led by IC faculty members, alumni and students continues to be internationally recognized in the form of various awards given during the past month.
Professor Giovanni de Micheli received the IEEE Computer Society’s 2016 Harry H. Goode Memorial Award for his seminal contributions to design and design tools for networks on chips. This award is given on the basis of achievements in the information processing field, which are considered of outstanding significance.
Pinar Tozun, an IC alumni, was given an Honourable Mention for the 2016 SIGMOD Jim Gray Doctoral Dissertation Award for her thesis dissertation titled “Transactions Chasing Scalability and Instruction Locality on Multicores”, developed under the supervision of Professor Anastasia Ailamaki in the Data-Intensive Applications and Systems Laboratory. Her thesis focuses on scalability and efficiency of data management systems on modern hardware.
Marco Mondelli, Shrinivas Kudekar, Santhosh Kumar, Henry D. Pfister, Eren Sasoglu and Professor Rüdiger Urbanke received a best paper award for “Reed-Muller Codes Achieve Capacity on Erasure Channels” at the STOC 2016: 48th Annual Symposium on the Theory of Computing. The award was given on the basis of the extraordinary research finding; a solution to a long-standing problem in coding theory.
Hamza Harkous, Rameez Rahman, Bojan Karlas, and Professor Karl Aberer won the Distinguished Poster Award at the twelfth Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security (SOUPS 2016) for their poster titled: “The Curious Case of the PDF Converter that Likes Mozart: Dissecting and Mitigating the Privacy Risk of Personal Cloud Apps.”
Ajay Kumar Tanwani, an IC doctoral student, and Sylvain Calinon’s (Idiap), were among the finalists of the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation 2016 Best Manipulation Paper Award for: "Learning Robot Manipulation Tasks with Task-Parameterized Semi-Tied Hidden Semi-Markov Model."
