Competition for students in architecture

The Laboratory of Architecture and Sustainable Technologies (LAST) is organizing, with the support of Real Estate and Infrastructures Department (DII), EPFL Sustainability Unit, EPFL Student Foundation (FEE) and the Vaud section of the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects (SIA), a competition for the students in architecture. Entitled "Sustainable is Beautiful", it focuses on the creation of a new "Point Vélo" on the EPFL campus, integrating the principles of sustainable construction.

This new “Point Vélo” program corresponds to a total area of 200 m2, mainly consisting of one office and spaces dedicated to reception, repairs and storage. As part of a willingness to promote soft mobility, the planned site for the new “Point Vélo” is located in the northern part of EPFL campus, along the Chemin des Arpenteurs, not far from M1 station.

The architectural approach will be based in particular on searching for an appropriate adequacy of the means employed, on mastering constructive processes with the vision of demolition and on the creative use of materials with low energy, environmental and economic costs. The competition will thus offer students the opportunity not only to imagine the architectural design on a conceptual angle, but also to experiment its achievement by developing it in its constructive reality.

Representing as much the academic world as the professional practice, the jury will be composed of Prof. Emmanuel Rey, Dan Bolomey, lecturer, Pierre Gerster, Delegate of Real Estate & Infrastructures, Philippe Vollichard, Deputy for Sustainable Campus Unity, Isabelle Cahour, FEE representative, Astrid Dettling, architect, representing SIA and Sandra Maccagnan, architect, Fournier & Maccagnan, Bex. The jury will have a total amount of CHF 9'000.- to be awarded to the winning project and to possible distinctions.

This competition is conceived as the first step of the process supposed to lead to the effective realization of the building welcoming the new Point Vélo. The winning team will be involved from the project development to its implementation phase, in collaboration with an architectural firm, which will be appointed for that purpose.
