An exceptional musical event for the Rolex Learning Center!

An original musical show has been created to mirror the renowned fluid architecture designed by the Japanese architects SANAA: a variation on the links between technology and art, architecture and acoustics, and dream and reality.

On 25 and 26 November, ensemBle baBel will be performing a work comprising music, images and lighting in the Forum of the Rolex Learning Center. Using a video installation and a setting that puts the emphasis on the curves of the building, baBel will reflect its architecture in every aspect. The show will draw on the research performed by the musicians. One of the characteristics of their approach is to adapt their shows to the venues, to create new kinds of performance.
With (L)ear(ning) (C)enter, baBel will be exploring the universe of science and fusing it with the world of art. On this occasion, the ensemble will be playing works by the composers Johann Sebastian Bach and Edgard Varèse, as well as improvised pieces.
This performance will be rather like a journey. The ensemBle baBel musicians move around, while the audience remains still. Immersed in the experience, they feel disorientated by a continued zoom effect. During the show at EPFL, small objects and micro-sounds will become enormous, and the whole Learning Center will be present in the Rolex Forum. As a result of these audio-visual effects, the structures of the buildings are modified, and this in turn produces an alteration of scale. The inside comes outside, and the external becomes internal.
The show, created in cooperation with the EPFL’s Cultural and Artistic Affairs department, enters into a dynamic relation with the vast spaces of the Rolex Learning Center. This architectural work waves like the score of a musical composition, with its hills and valleys, and its view on the horizon. This performance of ensemBle baBel will develop a dialog with the fluid forms and precision of this structure.
